PBX IP
A conventional Private Branch Exchange (PBX) needs one network for data and another for voice. An IP PBX ("PBX on IP" or "PBX IP") system runs on an IP data network. It is cost-efficient and minimizes network management. PBX IP technology features advanced communication capabilities, excellent scalability and sturdiness. All conversations are transmitted as data packets over the network.
PBX IP is also interoperable with traditional PSTN lines through an elective gateway. IP phones and soft phones can also be used on PBX IP phone system. Hence, upgrade of existing communication systems to PBX IP is simple. With a PBX IP system in place, regular telephone numbers of the organization can be retained and all users are allowed to share the same external phone lines.
PBX IP systems are easy to install and configure compared to a legacy phone systems. A PBX IP is essentially software that runs on a computer and can be maintained by anyone with basic proficiency in computers. On the other hand, proprietary phone systems require highly skilled personnel for installation.
Since PBX IP is managed through a web-based configuration interface, it enables easy maintenance. Legacy phone systems do not have friendly user interfaces and can be managed only by specific technicians. VOIP service providers can be utilized for long distance and international calls, by organizations that run PBX IP. This is especially beneficial for organizations that have multiple offices, and the result is significant cost savings.
PBX IP also eliminates the need for cumbersome phone wiring. It enables phone equipment to be directly connected to a standard computer network port and software phones to be installed on the computer. The PBX IP system consists of SIP phone(s), a PBX IP server and a VOIP Gateway (if required) to connect to PSTN lines. All SIP hardware and software phones can be used with SIP-based PBX IP, PSTN Gateway or VOIP provider. Proprietary phone systems do not function with all phone types.
Expansion of proprietary systems is based on availability of expensive hardware modules. Scalability of PBX IP systems is software-based and is simple. It is easy to add and upgrade features. Using PBX IP, phone functionality can be combined with business applications, to provide better customer experience. For instance, calls can be initiated from Outlook, instead of typing complete phone numbers.
PBX IP systems enable seamless roaming to new locations. With legacy PBX systems, it is an uphill task to move offices and physically re-patch extensions to the new site. With PBX IP, there is no patching required. Using SIP software phones, it is possible for employees to work from home or anywhere in the world. Calls can continue to be answered at their extension, similar to that in office.
SIP phones are easy to use due to the friendly user interface that provides a clear indication of the status of various extensions and calls in the network. PBX IP is a complete telephony system and worth the investment for every business.
